I'd like to start by describing the aim of this project, which is helping and getting to know better the community that is hosting us, so with this goal we started to think about a good idea to accomplish both the targets of the project.
In the beginning, we had a lot of ideas, but there was one characteristic that they all had in common: helping the one in need, for example, some of the ideas were to assist an animal shelter or raise money for association or do something for the elderly, but at the end after various discussion and research on what we needed for all of them and if we could afford it, we decided to help the homeless.
After confirming with our coordinator that it was possible, we started to search for an association to contact in the city, to understand better their needs and what we could do to help them.
In the end, we decided to collaborate with "The House of the Missionaries of Love" which is a convent located on the Parnica River, at ul. Bulwar Gdański 31. At present, it is inhabited by 6 sisters and they do a lot for the community, for example, anonymous alcoholics have meetings at the sisters' house, several times a month, there are also meetings for poor families and children, often found and invited by sisters from neglected districts of Szczecin.
The sisters also run a canteen for homeless people from all over the city, where the poor can eat lunch almost every day, quench their thirst on hot days, and warm up in winter.
And specifically in these actions is where we offered our help, the sisters were really kind, welcoming us and, really happy to receive help, so they gave us a list of their needs, such as underwear, gloves, and scarves.
With this, our goal was achieved, but we decided to think about another way to help the sisters, and the homeless and reflecting on the different possibilities we decided that writing a blog, recording a video, and talking about our project online would have been a great idea to raise the awareness in the community so that also other people could get to know the situation of the homeless and some ways to help them. Finally, we found ourselves really proud and satisfied with what came out of this project and we feel really overwhelmed by the happiness of knowing we helped someone, these are some of our thoughts about this amazing opportunity that we had:
Among the many ideas we had for the project, I think we have chosen the best and that is to help homeless people through an association. There are many ways to help homeless people that we do not know and that it would be nice if we knew because there really are people who need it.
I am happy to do this project and help homeless people. We had to do a mini project and find something meaningful for us and the local community and I think that it is what we did. Supporting a local association in the help they give to homeless people is important. Also making research on homelessness to create our video allowed me to learn new things and to be more aware of the subject. With this experience, I will have learned that we can all do something at our level to help people, there is a lot of opportunities so you just need to start looking and you will find a way to take action.
I enjoy helping people, that's why I like the project that we are developing. We wanted to focus on getting out of our comfort zone, something in which we could grow in any way. Giving back feels amazing because you can see the hope and the gratitude in their eyes. With this small and kind action, we transformed someone's day into a better one. Many organizations are helping these people, and they are always open to any kind of help, so if you are thinking about it, don't hesitate!
During these chaotic covid times we understandably worry about staying safe and at home with our families but many people have no homes or families to worry about them. I chose to help the homeless people because they have mostly been forgotten due to the pandemic. Along with raising awareness for organisations who are helping along with general awareness for Homeless people we will also help by donating as much as we can, we can't help everyone but we're doing what we can given the circumstances. The mini project wasn't very easy, we couldn't just go and talk to organisations face to face and that made it a bit more difficult to coordinate but I think we did well
